Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by her aunt Denise when she was a kid. Her aunt was a nurse who stayed overnight in order to provide her with the opportunity to study art literature or theater. DuVernay was introduced to the 1961 movie West Side Story by her aunt. DuVernay realized that art could be an effective way to spread the cause of activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother, with a conscience for social issues, and encouraged DuVernay to express herself through art. Although DuVernay lived within Compton with her parents, she lived in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. Her father was awed by the historic Civil Rights marches over the Edmund Pettus Bridge, in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. Her summers in Alabama's Selma would inspire her later to make the film about Martin Luther King Jr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. Following graduation, she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with degrees in English and African American studies. DuVernay was a student at the college at the time she began to become interested in production for the broadcast media. She began working as an intern at CBS News during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being assigned to sit at the house of one member of the jury, and then look through their trash. Due to her duties she began to feel dissatisfied by journalistic work and entered the public relations industry. DuVernay began working in a small studio as a junior publicist right after college. In 1999, she established her own firm of public relations dubbed The DuVernay Agency. Apart from PR, the agency developed several lifestyle websites like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
